    This declaration is timely and necessary. Massive investments in AI have incentivized many companies and individuals to push for rapid adoption of generative AI tools without careful consideration of when they are fit for purpose or how negative effects of these technologies can be mitigated. It is critical to act to prevent a flood of low-quality generated products from burying quality research, and to demand that proper attribution of ideas and results be maintained, not cast aside in the name of expediency.

    I am horrified by the extent of outright intellectual property theft underpinning technology companies (see, e.g., the Anthropic USD 1.5bn settlement). In addition to the Leiden declaration, I would recommend reading "The dilemmas of delegation" published by the Ada Lovelace Institute on how unethical use of technology disrupts education and hurts the young generation, hence all of us.

    The value of LLMs with respect to mathematics lies mainly in two capabilities: suggesting novel approaches to problems and producing formal proofs. Neither capability, however, can substitute for sound human understanding or the effort required to get there. The proper role of LLMs in the mathematical community, as this declaration affirms, is not as deities to be revered without question, but as just some of the many tools that we can use to further the collective knowledge of our subject and our world.
