I am about to start a PhD position. I fear that the rampant use of AI might hinder me in acquiring and consolidating the skills needed for research. For example I will probably need to spend more time worrying about the correctness (mathematical or otherwise) of preprints (if not articles) instead of understanding the mathematics itself. As a developing researcher I dead the thought of studying deeply and carefully a paper only to realize suddenly (hopefully by myself) that the result was just plausible but nonsense. This seems like a waste of time and resources that would be better spent learning and doing actual mathematics. On top of this, the already competitive and precarious position researchers are put in will become even more unwelcoming soon unless the use of AI becomes severely moderated and/or massively democratized (as in, the most powerful models cannot be accessible only to the richest institutions). I also fear that AI will accelerate the already real and saddening trend where mathematics is become more and more slave to monetary interests. Positions dedicated to the development of and research in AI already are massively overrepresented compared to other fields in mathematics.

We can all see the potential harms, and potential benefits that the emerging technology provides and promises. I believe this document provides an excellent balance of proposals for minimising the harms and maximising the benefits.

Proper use of AI to deliver value that benefits out societies include understanding pros and cons and establish insights into current state of capabilities of AI its limitations. We need to work for transparency, trustworthy and secure use of AI and AI-enabled technologies. Also, we need to take into account human values to ensure that AI is not abused in ways that at large is not beneficial to our societies and values. The future of AI belongs to all of us.

I fully support this declaration. As an AI-augmented learner, I have seen how AI can transform the methodology of learning mathematics and serve as a catalyst for conceptual understanding. Nevertheless, it must be used critically: proof, verification, attribution, and responsibility must remain with human judgment.
