As a mathematician, I care not just about the end results, but also the journey that leads to it. AI is destroying my journey.

Mathematics is a precious human endeavor and should remain so. No matter what advantage this technology offers us, it is important to acknowledge the tremendous negative externalities (human and non-human) of this tool which are quickly overtaking it's purported gains. Mathematics is also an ethical enterprise and should remain so.

An important dimension that should not be overlooked is the training of mathematicians and future mathematics teachers in the era of artificial intelligence. This declaration is focused on mathematical research, which is carried out by people who were trained in a very different context from the one in which students are currently being educated.

This declaration outlines principles for responsible AI use that are essential to preserving the integrity of mathematical research. While AI offers tremendous potential, its misuse will pollute the literature and compromise the foundations on which future mathematical advancements depend. Preserving the field requires mathematicians to engage thoughtfully with this emerging technology.

I support this declaration. I would like to stress that while AI can indeed be a useful new tool, the way it is advertised with hype and a misinformation blitz, has negative effect on the teaching and training of students. We can see already students are assuming mathematics is not a reasonable career for them, that mathematics is finished (ironically, the opposite is more likely, as the need for verification grows). At the same time young students are using AI wrong, delegating their thinking to the machines, this will have serious consequences in their training.

Mathematics is not merely content generation; it is a representation of human intelligence and deserves to be treated with seriousness.

As Ronny Xin Yi Chieng said re AI's impact in his Harvard graduates speech: “Our generation’s upcoming battle…is going to be people with substance versus people with shallow knowledge, it’s going to be mastery versus faking it, it’s going to be people with good taste versus tacky. I trust you will put in the work necessary to be on the right side of those battles.”

AI offers great opportunities we shouldn't let slip by, yet at the same time poses grave risks we must avoid at all cost. The Leiden Declaration is a good first step towards balancing the two.

This is an important and timely declaration affirming the centrality of human judgement, human values, and principles of fairness in mathematical and scientific research. If these recommendations are adhered to, even while embracing the possibilities on the horizon, Artificial Intelligence could potentially have a democratizing effect of making advanced mathematics more accessible globally.
