    Now more than ever, it is clear that we need to set out ethical guidelines for this powerful, yet still-not-well-understood technology. Generative AI can be a boon to scientists, but if we're collectively not intentional about its use, it'll cause considerably more harm than good. This is ignoring the other ethical issues of these tools, such as their resource and land cost, that their ownership lies in the hands of a select few corporations, and their potential for homogenization of culture to list a few.

    As Director of CWI, I am excited to endorse the Leiden Declaration. At CWI, we care deeply about fundamental mathematics and computer science, but also about what happens when these ideas meet other fields, new technologies, and real challenges that people encounter in their daily lives. AI is changing the way we do science, and that is both exciting and important to get right. The Leiden Declaration captures this moment beautifully: it asks us to stay curious and open, while protecting what makes mathematics and science truly valuable: trust, creativity, and human understanding. This is exactly the kind of conversation science communities should be having now.

    A very timely and thought-out response to the ultra-fast entry of AI into mathematical research. Let's hope the benefits of AI will outweigh its harmful potential. This, however, will not come for free and it will require good practice from all involved, in the way the Leiden declaration suggests.

    The global south remains underrepresented on frontiers of mathematical research, in no small part due to lack of access to opportunities and resources. Any advantages, real or perceived, emerging from artificial intelligence propelled by profit-driven corporations is likely to widen this divide further. It is imperative to have serious conversations on their use and promotion, keeping (amongst many other things) this access disparity in mind.
