This is an important and timely declaration affirming the centrality of human judgement, human values, and principles of fairness in mathematical and scientific research. If these recommendations are adhered to, even while embracing the possibilities on the horizon, Artificial Intelligence could potentially have a democratizing effect of making advanced mathematics more accessible globally.

I understand Mathematical Research as our best tool for achieving a human understanding of natural phenomena and of mathematics itself. Therefore, it is essential that humanity remains responsible for guiding its direction. I do not believe that a future in which science and technology are driven by AI is a desirable one. I endorse the recommendations presented and congratulate the working group that wrote the Leiden Declaration.
