    The impact of artificial intelligence on mathematical research has already become a reality. The future collaboration between AI and mathematical researchers is an inevitable direction of development. In my view, mathematics is a symbolic language we use to describe the physical world. The defining characteristics of this language are its clarity of expression and the verifiability of its internal logic. Therefore, the primary significance of mathematics for us humans lies in our ability to understand this language and use it to describe the physical world. I sign this manifesto because I believe that, both now and in the future, even if AI can enhance our efficiency in understanding and proving mathematics, humans should still remain the primary subjects of mathematical understanding, and humans should bear the primary responsibility for any papers that use AI-assisted proofs. This position will remain valid until a theory emerges that can rigorously prove, from a mathematical standpoint, that future novel intelligent agents are strictly equivalent to us at some level.

    The use of AI in science and mathematics is here to stay. What is in question is ownership. Are we willing to accept the collective labour of publicly funded research being appropriated by big AI companies? Or can we organize and fight to keep research publicly funded and publicly owned? I wholeheartedly support the Leiden Declaration, but we need more. We need publicly run and publicly owned AI resources; otherwise, we are bound to be rendered subservient to AI companies, whom we pay and for whom we do research.
